Health Care is Broken: How do We Fix it?

STATEMENT OF NEED: The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics faculty and partners at the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health and Methodist Healthcare Ministries created a committee that identified a need for an annual series on ethics across the lifespan. A needs assessment survey was conducted on March 30, 2009 where respondents identified ethics topics they would like to learn more about through this series. Of those surveyed, 91 percent indicated that they would like to learn more about national health policy and financing, and 87 percent identified a need for more education regarding access to health care for underserved populations.
TARGET AUDIENCE: This program is open to the public and addresses the educational need of physicians, nurses, social workers, other healthcare providers and patients.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss the shortcomings of America's Health Care System and the ethics of healthcare reform;
- Explain at least two proposals for increasing access to health care for Americans,
- Explore the alternative proposals for funding of Health care in America, including the positions of organized Medicine, i.e. the American Medical Association; and,
- Analyze the uses of Health Information Technology in improving the quality of care and reducing costs in health care.
