Art Rounds is a program of the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics designed to bring medical and nursing students together to view art at San Antonio's McNay Art Museum. It is open to 2nd- and 4th-year medical and nursing students.
The objectives of the program include:
- Improving observational skills
- Increasing interprofessional communication
- Developing comfort with ambiguity
- Developing empathy
Similar programs have been used by Harvard School of Medicine, Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, and Columbia School of Medicine for a number of years. Studies indicate that students benefit from these programs by increasing their acuity in visual observation, which translates to improved patient care.
Your participation will require a commitment of 7 hours. Interactive sessions will meet at the McNay Art Museum. In interprofessional groups of 10, a museum educator will guide students to look at specific pieces of art while teaching visual observation skills. Each session will be 1.5 hours in length from 6:30-8pm. We ask that you plan to arrive by 6:15pm. You must be able to attend all sessions. There is no fee to participate. There will be a short program evaluation.
The McNay Museum Educators are Rose Glennon, Jennifer W. Chowning, and Kate Carey.
