Art Rounds is a program of the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics designed to bring medical and nursing students together to view art at San Antonio's McNay Art Museum. The initial offering of this program is open to undergraduate medical and nursing students.
The objectives of the program include:
- Improving observational skills
- Increasing interprofessional communication
- Developing comfort with ambiguity
- Developing empathy
Similar programs have been used by Harvard School of Medicine, Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Columbia School of Medicine for a number of years. Studies indicate that students benefit from these programs by increasing their acuity in visual observation, which translates to improved patient care.
This is an enhancement program, not an elective course. Your participation will require 6.5 hours during the month of January.
Students will be asked to take an on-line pre-test which will require approximately 45 minutes of your time. You will also be asked to take a similar post-test. In addition there will be a short program evaluation.
Interactive sessions will meet at the McNay Art Museum. In interprofessional groups of 10, a museum educator will guide students to look at specific pieces of art while teaching visual observation skills. Each session will be 1.5 hours in length from 6:30-8pm. We ask that you plan to arrive by 6:15pm. The museum segments will occur on Thursdays, January 14, 21, and 28. You must be able to attend all sessions. There is no fee to participate.
The McNay Museum Educators are Rose Glennon, Jennifer W. Chowning, and Kate Carey.
