Richard Ferguson, MD
Richard Ferguson, board-certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, is an Adjunct Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at UT Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Born in Ames, Iowa, he has lived in virtually all of the contiguous 48 states as well as Hawaii and Cuba. He moved to Texas for his college education, receiving both his BA and MA in English at Texas Tech University before completing his MD at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1975. He served his both his residency and internship in San Antonio and set up a practice in Internal Medicine. During that time he established up to four free medical clinics around San Antonio, where he served the marginalized and poor. Additionally, he founded the San Antonio International Piano Competition in 1983 which invites a select group of the world's best performers every three years to perform for significant monetary prizes.
Following the sale of his practice in 2002, Dr. Ferguson turned his attention to the low-income and homeless members of the San Antonio community, and is currently operating two free medical clinics, one at Travis Park United Methodist Church and the other at the Lay Order of the Franciscans' Meeting House in Alamo Heights, Texas. The two clinics, which partner with the UTHSCSA School of Nursing and the UTHSCSA Department of Physician Assistants, saw more than 1,000 patients in the last year. Dr. Ferguson also has served as Fellowship Director in Palliative Care at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Antonio and continues as Medical Director of Christus Santa Rosa Hospice. He continues to teach and lectures frequently on ethics, palliative care and end-of-life issues.
