Gregory Anstead, MD, PhD
Dr. Anstead trained as a chemist, obtaining a PhD from the University of Illinois prior to entering medical school. He obtained his MD from the same institution, and was an internal medicine resident at the University of Kentucky. He finished his infectious diseases fellowship training at UTHSCSA and was hired as an Assistant Professor in July of 2000.
Dr. Anstead has accomplished a great deal in the areas of clinical care, teaching and research. As a clinician, he shoulders a big load on the infectious diseases service and the HIV inpatient service. He is Medical Director of the VA Immunosuppression Clinic where he provides HIV and Primary care.
Apart from the clinical teaching he does on the wards and in the clinics, Dr. Anstead has taken an active part in classroom instruction, becoming involved in the didactic course on Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology for 4th-year medical students, and in the Introduction to Medicine course for 2nd-year students. He has also taught in the physician assistant and physical therapy programs and the medical microbiology classes where he gives a total of six lectures to the first-year medical students. He has an active interest in the history of infectious diseases and has given talks on the history of plague and typhus to residents, fellows and other groups.
His research efforts are impressive and he has a long list of publications including seven book chapters and over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles. His clinical interest in fungal infections has resulted in several important chapters and reviews and he is making a name as an expert in this area. He has been a co-investigator or a principal investigator in a large number of clinical trials. In addition his basic research on malnutrition and its effect on immunity has been well funded by the VA, by a VISN grant, and two Career Development Awards.
Greg has participated in committee work and service to the University and he has been active in the community and in mission work.
