Connective Tissue




Since 2008, Connective Tissue has played an important role in cultivating arts and humanities at the UT Health Science Center. Complimentary copies of the current issue are available in the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, located on the 4th floor of the Briscoe Library.

We are currently accepting submissions for the upcoming issue with expected publication in Spring 2017.

Submissions are due by Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 11 PM.
Selections will be made and entrants will be notified no later than Monday, February 6, 2017.

ONLINE ENTRY SUBMISSION

Submission Categories

  • Literature
    prose, poetry, essays, interviews, memoirs, narratives, short stories
     
  • 55-Word Story
    must be exactly 55 words, may be fiction or non-fiction (see examples published in 2016 issue)
     
  • Visual Art
    painting, illustration, sculpture, mixed media
     
  • Photography

General Rules

  • Submissions are welcome from students, faculty, staff, patients, volunteers, and associates
     
  • Work must be your own and not previously published
     
  • We encourage submitting pieces related to healthcare, but this is not a prerequisite
     
  • Visual art should be submitted for review in digital format
     
  • Written work must be fewer than 2,000 words, and exactly 55 words for the 55-Word Story category
     
  • Multiple submissions are welcome, with up to three submissions per person (in any category)





CT is seeking student members for the 2016-17 Editorial Staff. Students from all UTHSCSA schools are encouraged to apply. This is a great opportunity to add a more creative component to your medical studies. All editorial staff should plan to attend 4-6 planning/editorial meetings throughout the academic year, with a greater time commitment in the spring semester. All editorial committee members are recognized in the annual publication.

ONLINE APPLICATION FOR EDITORIAL STAFF POSITIONS

Applications are due by Monday, September 5, 2016.
Selections will be made and all applicants notified no later than Friday, September 16, 2016.

Descriptions of Editorial Staff Positions

  • Executive Editor: Assists in developing the editorial calendar, organizing committee meetings, coordinating the review/editing process, managing budget, sending communication to contributors, and enforcing publication deadlines. The Executive Editor position requires a leader with outstanding communication, editorial, and organizational skills.
     
  • Director of Design: Leads discussions related to journal design, develops promotional materials (posters, fliers, web graphics), maps out content layout for 80-page journal publication, routes page proofs to committee members and stakeholders for editorial review, incorporates copy-edits, creates production-ready print files, and communicates directly with printer on file-related issues. The Director of Design's primary involvement in the publication process will take place in February 2017, with final files to printer by early March. The Director of Design position requires a creative mindset, sophisticated visual aesthetic, attention to detail, and strong technical skills with advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
     
  • Event Coordinator: Coordinates CT events, including the CT launch party in late March-early April 2017; coordinates details of CT launch party, including publicity/promotion, securing venue, invitations, RSVP list, catering, decorations, A/V and equipment rentals, speakers/presenters, and prizes for category winners. The Event Coordinator position requires exceptional organization, enthusiasm, and event planning experience.
     
  • Editorial Staff Member: Assists in a variety of activities related to publication of a high-quality journal shared with the UTHSCSA community, including: publicity, solicitation of submissions, participation on the literature and visual arts selection panels (see below), editorial review, fundraising, journal distribution, and event planning. Editorial Staff Members should be interested in humanities and enthusiastic about promotion of CT within the UTHSCSA community.





The Connective Tissue (CT) Literature & Visual Arts Journal is seeking student volunteers for the 2016-17 selection judging panel. Students from all UTHSCSA schools are encouraged to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to add a more creative component to your medical studies.

Selection panel members review all de-identified submissions in literature and/or visual art categories and submits rank-ordered list to editorial staff. The review/ranking process is done electronically on an individual basis and will take place in mid to late January 2017. You will not be required to attend any group meetings in this role but are encouraged to attend the launch party in April 2017. All selection panel members are recognized in the annual publication. There is currently no limit to the number of selection panel members, requests to participate will be accepted on a rolling basis until Sunday, December 11, 2016.
