Preparing for Community Service Learning:
ELEC 5044 & Healthy Choices for Kids NURE 3090
Interested in working with the public to provide services or improve access to care? Want to learn about community interventions for San Antonio's leading public health problems? The Center and the School of Nursing have created a three-week interdisciplinary course to prepare students to engage in community service learning projects.
First- and Second-year medical students (ELEC 5044) and undergraduate nursing students (NURE 3090) are eligible to receive course credit for this program. The course is pass/fail. Nursing students may recieve 3 upper-level credits, and medical students will receive a notation on their transcripts.
The three-week didactic course will be held on the UT Health Science Center Campus from May 24 - June 11, usually from 7 AM - 3 PM.
This program is also open to undergraduate students of any discipline who are interested in medicine, nursing or public health. Credit is now available for UTSA students - UTSA students should contact Ann Eisenberg for more information.

Healthy Choices for Kids (HCK)
Following the three-week didactic session, student will have the opportunity to participate in a community service learning project at Good Samaritan Center, located at 1600 Saltillo in West San Antonio, or at Krueger Middle School, located at 438 Lanark Drive in North East San Antonio. At each site there will be a day camp for junior high students where medical, nursing and undergraduate students will team up and implement the HCK curriculum they developed during the didactic course. The issues to becovered are determined based ona community needs assessment survey ofGood Sam and Krueger parents, and may include pregnancy andsexually transmitted infection prevention, violence and healthy relationships, alcohol and drug use, fitness and nutrition and internet safety. The curriculums may differ between sites depending on the needs assesment results.
When will HCK take place?
The Good Sam and Krueger Day Camps will take place three days per week from June 14- August 6 (schedule TBD).
What is my commitment if I sign up?
You can sign up for the three-week Preparing for Community Service elective, for the HCK service learning project, or for both. The schedule for the service learning project at Good Sam/Krueger day camp is flexible, and will be determined by students during the didactic session. It is okay if you are unable to attend every session due to class or clinic schedules. The didactic session is not required to participate in the service learning project, but is recommended.
