Challenges Working with a group of people means working with different schedules. A challenge we faced was deciding what days and times worked for us to meet and work on the project. Some factors included meeting virtually on zoom or in person all while having clinic, classes, and schoolwork to consider. Planning is vital in situations like this and sometimes resulted in splitting up the work when the schedules of the group did not mesh. However, by doing so, it helped tackle the work that needed to be done.
Lessons Learned We learned that when working with different people of different backgrounds, being educated on their culture can help you approach and understand them in many ways you sometimes would not think of. Learning about the people you’re working with or could possibly work with in the future can help build a great rapport and can lead to strong future bonds.
Success Story Once we started administering the narrative short story retell, Preschool Language Scales-5 (PLS-5) Screening, Articulation and Clinical Evaluation of Language fundamentals (CELF-5) screeners at Las Palmas Garden, we quickly learned that most of the participants were below average in terms of their speech and language skills. After a month and 2 weeks of implementing a fun way for the participants to learn without imitating a classroom setting and including more playtime-like learning, 70-80% of them improved in language skills and were able to create narratives in addition to relaying stories that consisted of the different grammar elements that were taught throughout the program.
