Challenges One of the challenges that we faced was getting people to fill out pre and post surveys. A few women did not want to fill out the surveys because of test-taking anxiety and others didn’t want to put down answers because they didn’t want to be wrong. Although we tried our best to assuage their apprehensions, we were not able to get 100% completion of surveys.
Lessons Learned One of the lessons that we learned was the power of working with smaller groups. We often think about making big changes on the population level- the more people we reach the better! However, we found that this was not the case. Even though our sample size was small, we were able to dramatically increase their knowledge about commonly diagnosed diseases and preventive healthcare. They were able to ask personalized questions that didn’t need to be filtered and received honest answers that filled in individual gaps of knowledge.
Success Story One woman during our round table session had particular anxiety about seeing doctors. Her past experience in healthcare traumatized her and unfortunately, prevents her from being her true self as the patient. She came with many questions that she felt she couldn’t ask physicians for fear of looking dumb given the perceived power dynamic. However, at our round table discussion, she asked many questions, unabashed because she was in a safe space, surrounded by women she trusted. We felt honored that she openly trusted us strangers and were glad that she felt empowered to ask those questions.
