Challenges Mainly the challenges are about communication. It is essential to keep track of everyone participating, send emails, and check in with volunteers very often.
Another thing we experienced was that since it was our first CSL project, we did not anticipate some supplies like canopies, and we had to borrow those on-site from the community partner.
Lessons Learned We learned that the community is in so much need of us to reach out. Most participants were so happy we took the time to help them and educate them. We learned that with effort, a significant impact can be achieved and that we can reach out to community partners to allow us to participate with the community.
We learned that an underrepresented and underserved community is welcoming of health professions students, and are willing to help us learn from them.
Success Story One person approached me with tears in their eyes to say thank you for doing this. It was the first time this person felt welcomed in a health setting, even when our health fair was not a health setting per se, but we were able to show compassion and empathy to everyone there.
