Call for Submissions – Art Exhibition
17th Annual Community Service Learning Conference, February 3, 2024
The Charles E. Cheever, Jr. Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics invites submissions of original art for the 17th Annual Community Service Learning Conference exhibition occurring February 3, 2024.
The theme of the 2024 conference is “One Planet. One Health” and focuses on the interconnectedness of the environment and animal/human health and the role of the health professional.
With the theme of planetary health, artists are invited to explore the joy and awe of Earth and of being among Earth’s many inhabitants, but also notions of loss, worry and peril. What is your vision of the planet and your community? What are the roles of different health care providers in caring for patients affected by planetary health conditions like heat illness, asthma, mental health, etc.? How are vulnerable populations (indigenous peoples, farm workers, migrants, pregnant women, etc.) disproportionately affected by inequities of planetary health? What does it mean to live in a changing climate? How do we address poverty, environmental justice, nutritional literacy?
Submissions of visual art—paintings, photography, mixed media, sculpture, textiles, and others—are highly encouraged. Written pieces (poetry, short prose) may be considered, and should be accompanied by a video or audio file of the author reading the piece, for possible inclusion in a digital exhibition. The exhibition will open at the UTHSA Briscoe Library in late January 2024.
Submit your original creative work by Monday, January 8, 2024, 11:59 PM. Any digital art should include a statement disclosing whether and how Artificial Intelligence was used in the composition.
For UTHSCSA students, staff, faculty and residents, kindly use provided link for your submissions. Non-UTHSCSA staff members, please send your submissions via email to humanities@uthscsa.edu.
